3-D and SIRDS images  

This archive contains single image random dot stereo (SIRDS) and other 3-D images, together with related information and software. The original archive is also available via anonymous FTP. See also the alt.3d.misc, alt.3d.sird and other alt.3d newsgroups and related FAQs. See some early ASCII stereogram articles.

Try the following PostScript format stereograms for starters:

• Batman symbol
• Ghostbusters
• Motorola logo
• Star Trek: The Next Generation

You should position the two dots at the top of the screen. This may require the ``seascape'' (upsidedown landscape) option on some PostScript previewers.

Some of my favorite sterograms incorporate other images as well as the stereo image. For examples, see an image adapted for a drawing by the graphic artist Escher, an image of ``Lena'' and a tunnel image in glorious technicolour.

Papers

• The 25-page paper Displaying 3D Images: Algorithms for Single Image Random Dot Stereograms by H.W. Thimbleby, S. Inglis and I.H. Witten gives a technical description of some of the techniques involved in producing SIRDS images, and the pitfalls that can be encountered. Published in IEEE Computer, 27(10):38-48, October 1994. • A 3-page article on ASCII Stereograms by J.P. Bowen is on-line, including some examples. Also in PDF format.
